Windmill Paper Mill Schoone Haas in Waddinxveen before 1900 along Gouwe River | 20231206

Schoone Haas papiermolen in Waddinxveen (english below)

EN – Recently, a film of the Schoone Haas steam paper mill in the village of Waddinxveen was posted as part of a series of images from around 1900 about life and work along the Gouwe river in Holland (1).
Here is a photo of the windmill paper factory De Schoone Haas on the site of the later filmed steam paper factory Schoone Haas – with the Remonstrant church in the foreground, next to the Alblas sawmill.
The same mill and buildings are also depicted in a painting (from the miller’s family archive) of the Schoone Haas windmill, published with the story of eyewitness, papermaker, Albert van Os in the magazine of the Historical Society Waddinxveen – ‘Het Historisch Genootschap Waddinxveen’ (2).
The photo also shows a chimney – which is not in the painting – and appears smaller than the chimney in photos of the paper mill when the mill was gone (burned down by lightning in 1897). From 1879, De Schoone Haas also used steam for paper production, initially a small installation, later larger. The photo appears to have been taken in the period from 1879 to 1897, when steam was also used.

Song sung by Isabella’s great-grandchild Ameet Kanon (aka Queen George) , who explained today – Friday , December 1, 2023 – at the premiere :

“The Abbey – it’s been so special and personal keeping you to myself, but your message was always too big for me not to share it …

… This is Isabella Weinreb Castegnier. She is my great-grandmother. On April 19th, 1943, pregnant with my grandmother, she jumped out of a moving train headed to Auschwitz. She was being sent to her death, simply because she was a Jew. She understood that it was now or never, die at the destination or die trying, so she jumped. In the years to follow this epic jump, the Abbeys of Brussels became a place of hiding, survival, and safety for them time and time again.”

Ocean Climate Motor | 20230916

Leiden University Exam 1979 Böttcher | Ocean Climate Motor | 20230916 | 1-memo•com

Finally , the ocean motor driving our climate is news – cover story by Jaap Tielbeke in the dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer #35 (31 aug 2023): ‘The blue machine is malfunctioning’.

With a changing climate, that machine may perhaps stop suddenly, and result in catastrofic snowball effects, I learned ca 50 years ago , but never before noticed in the news.

The ocean motor : with the Gulf Stream bringing warm ocean water at the surface from the Caribbean to Europe – resulting in a mild climate in Europe – continuing further north the now cooled – and heavier saltier – water sinks to the bottom of the ocean , and the stream cold water returns at the bottom to the South.
With higher temperatures at the North Pole and less cooling of the surface water that circulation may stop abrupt.

Already in the 70s we – biology students at the Leiden university in Holland – were told about the danger of a greenhouse effect – the effects over the next 50-100 years : the global rising temperature by 2-5 degrees Celsius / 4-9 Fahrenheit , melting of polar ice caps , rise of the sea level …. and because people in the west part of Holland are living far below the sea level – some 50% of our country vanishing in the North Sea … with the now eastern Dutch town of ‘Amersfoort’ becoming a sea-side town .. “Amersfoort on Sea”.
That’s at least the take-home-message I got late 1970s from professor Frits Böttcher’s fascinating , expert , lectures at the Leiden university “Our dependence on the natural resources” that I took for my master’s study Biochemistry (B4) – a ‘caput’ lecture series in ’77/’78 with the dutch title “Natuurlijke hulpbronnen en onze afhankelijkheid ervan”.
Böttcher was a co-founder of the ‘Club of Rome’ (link http://www.clubofrome.org/Index.php?s=bottcher++ ) . The image shows my exam card and mark by Böttcher in ’79.

A hypothesis in the 70s…the ocean motor may stop…now the motor has slowed down.
