Dutch cinema news Jan 1937 showing the brand new Boskoop bridge , build 1936 in Boskoop village over the Gouwe river , in the Green Heart of Holland.
Riveted steel lift bridge over the Gouwe, built 1935-1936 by N.V. De Vries Robbé & Co. from Gorinchem for the widening and canalization of the Gouwe in the context of the improvement of the waterway from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. Identical vertical lift bridges are located in Waddinxveen and in Alphen aan den Rijn.
The passage width is 25 meters, the width between the railings is 9 meters. The vertical clearance when closed is 2.5 meters and when opened it is 35 meters. On the bridge there are steel railings with decorative circles and the name and year of construction of the bridge in wrought ironwork: “Boschkoopse Brug, Anno Domini 1936”

Finally , the ocean motor driving our climate is news – cover story by Jaap Tielbeke in the dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer #35 (31 aug 2023): ‘The blue machine is malfunctioning’.
With a changing climate, that machine may perhaps stop suddenly, and result in catastrofic snowball effects, I learned ca 50 years ago , but never before noticed in the news.
The ocean motor : with the Gulf Stream bringing warm ocean water at the surface from the Caribbean to Europe – resulting in a mild climate in Europe – continuing further north the now cooled – and heavier saltier – water sinks to the bottom of the ocean , and the stream cold water returns at the bottom to the South. With higher temperatures at the North Pole and less cooling of the surface water that circulation may stop abrupt.
Already in the 70s we – biology students at the Leiden university in Holland – were told about the danger of a greenhouse effect – the effects over the next 50-100 years : the global rising temperature by 2-5 degrees Celsius / 4-9 Fahrenheit , melting of polar ice caps , rise of the sea level …. and because people in the west part of Holland are living far below the sea level – some 50% of our country vanishing in the North Sea … with the now eastern Dutch town of ‘Amersfoort’ becoming a sea-side town .. “Amersfoort on Sea”. That’s at least the take-home-message I got late 1970s from professor Frits Böttcher’s fascinating , expert , lectures at the Leiden university “Our dependence on the natural resources” that I took for my master’s study Biochemistry (B4) – a ‘caput’ lecture series in ’77/’78 with the dutch title “Natuurlijke hulpbronnen en onze afhankelijkheid ervan”. Böttcher was a co-founder of the ‘Club of Rome’ (link http://www.clubofrome.org/Index.php?s=bottcher++ ) . The image shows my exam card and mark by Böttcher in ’79.
A hypothesis in the 70s…the ocean motor may stop…now the motor has slowed down.

Today 80 years ago, Isabella Weinreb was three months pregnant with Viviane , when she jumped in the night of 19-20 April 1943, around 2AM from the 20th deportation train – Transport XX – from Mechelen direction Auschwitz.
Isabella escaped with a broken wrist , and knocked on the door of this St. Kamillus institute in Bierbeek, where she was helped further on her escape route back home in Brussels. Viviane was born 6 months later at in Brussels.
Viviane, who is now living in the USA, returned this week – on Holocaust Remembrance Day – to the place her mother escaped and saved both their lives, together with photographer Jo Struyven , author Nathalie Strubbe, and documentary filmmaker Michel van der Burg. Yesterday, April 19, 2023 , Viviane Yarom told her story of the escape from Transport XX, at the Study Day on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the 20th convoy presented by the Jewish Museum of Belgium and The Auschwitz Foundation in the Jewish Museum of Belgium, in Brussels.
In the Jewish Museum of Belgium , the exhibition ‘236 – Land(es)capes from the 20th convoy’ by Jo Struyven and Luc Tuymans, runs until Mon 14 August.

On the night of April 19 to 20 around 1 a.m., the Belgian partisans Romain Baplu, Gustav (Albert) Poncelet, Pieter Scheepers and Maurice Swinnen – active in the Leuven Partisans group – sabotaged the 20th convoy (Transport XX) just outside Leuven by placing a barricade on the railway track at Korbeek-Lo.
This delayed the 20th convoy of 1,631 Jews in cattle wagons, who were being deported from the Dossin transit camp in Mechelen to Auschwitz. Many deportees jumped from this death train further along between Korbeek-Lo and Tienen. This was the second time that night that the transport had been sabotaged from the outside.
Earlier that night, before Leuven, at Haacht (close to Boortmeerbeek), the three young Brussels heroes Youra Livchitz (Dr. Georges Livchitz), Robert Maistriau, and Jean Franklemon had carried out an attack on Transport XX. They freed 17 people by opening one of the cattle wagons.
