On the quay Europe’s first skyscraper, the ‘Witte Huis’ – White House – built in 1898 by Willem Molenbroek in the Art Nouveau style – a 10-storey building – 43 meter ( 140 ft ) tall – at the time an unprecedented height in Europe.
One of the few buildings that survived the German bombing of Rotterdam in World War II – aka the Rotterdam Blitz.
Clipper Barge Haringvliet | 20220123 | 1-memo•com | Classic clipper barge ‘Verwisseling’ earlier this month at the quay of the Haringvliet inland port in the delta of the Rhine river (Rijn) and Meuse river (Maas) in Rotterdam. Unfortunately I missed the ‘klipperkrullen’ curly decoration at the front of this sailing ship.
On the other bank – the south bank – a few buildings that survived the German bombing of Rotterdam in World War II – aka the Rotterdam Blitz – merchant houses from the early 1700s.
Because of the May 14, 1940 bombing the Rotterdam Dance School of Corrie Hartong had to move and found accomodation in one of these buildings with the white fronts , the 3rd from the right (no. 92). To the right the Rotterdam Student Society at no 94.
The rightmost merchant house with a white front – no. 98 – belonged to merchants from the 1700s – like families from the Dutch East India Company (Snellen) and in the 1800s a mayor (van Vollenhoven) and later the German merchant family Sölling that started banking with German relations.
In the early 1900s the Incasso-Bank and another bank housed here. The Incasso Bank made changes to the front of the building. After a silent protest march by Afghan asylum seekers and Belgians November 2013 into Brussels, the hundreds of Afghan refugees – children, women, men – set up a makeshift tent camp inside the Brussels’ Beguinage church. March 2014 , the women and children have found refugee elsewhere in the city, but the men stay. Early April 2014 it is decided, that April 15th everyone who sleeps here will be kicked out.

Some days later – April 14th, 2014 – Greet reported to me the interview she had with the priest Daniël Alliët in the Beguinage church :
“The decision was made by the priest and the Kerkfabriek (Michel – Kerkfabriek translates to ~ the Church administration of the Beguinage church). In the interview priest Daniel explains in a more nuanced way – the causes, trigger, consequences, vision – why the Afghans have to leave the church tomorrow. At first glance, it seems like a decision with negative consequences (30 people become homeless). But in the long run, I think it’s a step in the right direction.
After all, Afghans are not simply thrown out on the street. The church factory is intensively looking for alternative sleeping places. And the protest against the asylum policy has not diminished at all, but has simply been organized differently.”
