Rembrandt Bridge Leiden • 20241210

The Rembrandt Bridge is a double wooden drawbridge over the Rijn (Rhine) river on the edge of the historic centre of the Dutch city of Leiden. The bridge — a replica of the original build in 1650 — is named after the painter Rembrandt van Rijn. The post mill De Put (The Pit), is a replica of the windmill that stood here in Rembrandt’s time , opposite the similar malt mill of Rembrandt’s family – on the other side of the Rijn river where Rembrandt was born and raised.

View from the Rembrandt bridge in the city of Leyden, Holland. Here Rembrandt van Rijn was born, and had his first studio from 1624, on the quay here on the left (Kort Galgewater), at this corner of the Rijn (Rhine) river called ‘Galgewater’ (Gallows Water) where at that time –  from 1659 to 1795 (1,2) the bodies of those executed were hanging on the gallows placed along the river.

Saint Vincent footbridge in Lyon • 20240726

Saint Vincent footbridge, Saône, Lyon, June 1991.

While reading in the novel “Rescue Run” – on a daring rescue across Nazi-occupied Europe (a not yet published book by John Winn Miller) – with an attempt to escape a bounty hunter in Lyon, France, by crossing the footbridge ‘Passerelle Saint Vincent’ across the Saône river…I remembered taking a photograph of long bridges in Lyon during a working visit early 90s.

Diving in my archive I found 16 pictures, including two with bridges, taken in the old city during my visit for presentations of my pancreatic islet research work at a meeting June 6–8, 1991 in Lyon (France) : the 3rd International Congress on Pancreatic and Islet Transplantation, Symposium on Artificial Insulin Delivery System.

Using Google street view I learned that indeed one of my images shows that old ‘Passerelle Saint Vincent’ footbridge over the Saône ;)
