Steam Train Gouda-Alphen Holland 1934 | 20231113

Stoomtrein Gouda-Alphen Holland 1934 (english below)

EN – Sunday 7 October 1934 – Opening of the Gouda-Waddinxveen-Boskoop-Alphen railway line in Holland with festive arrival of the steam train at Boskoop station.
NB. Film shows images from along the railway line and successively shows the stations of respectively recognizable by name Waddinxveen and Boskoop. However, I recognize the first shot of a ‘station building’ in this film as also an image of Boskoop station, while the suggestion is that this would be Gouda – and the crowd of people along the line in the 3rd shot will probably also be in Gouda.

Boskoop 1920s | 20231111

Arrival by steamboat service in Boskoop center at the stop in front of Hotel Neuf, with in the background the Protestant church. Visiting the village criss-crossed by ditches, and bridges, with the Protestant village church (Dorpskerk) at the village street (Dorpstraat) on the left (west) side of the Gouwe river, and the Roman Catholic Saint John the Baptist church (Sint-Johannes de Doper kerk) on the other side of the Gouwe river. Flags in the village street there – now in 2023 called Gouwestraat – perhaps for one of the big exhibitions of the village flower and (fruit) tree growers, famous since 1911. That sign ‘Bergplaats voor rijwielen en automobielen’ – Storage area for bicycles and cars – is close to the ‘Tentoonstellingsgebouw” the Exhibition Building …as reported in a Gouda newspaper advertisement on a National flower exhibition June 1926 (Goudsche Courant , Monday 14 June 1926).
Original film published 1921 by the famous dutch cineast Willy Mullens with his Haghe Film factory. Edit from film scan published by Open Beelden | Beeld & Geluid.

French Refugees October 1918 in Holland | 20231031

Silent film — Towards the end of World War I – in the summer 1918 , after the Allies defeated the Germans in the Second Battle of the Marne – large groups of Belgians and French refugees flee in front of the retreating enemy force to the neutral Netherlands.

The Dutch army and Red Cross prepared to receive a possible 100,000 evacuees in the border towns in the south of the Netherlands.

After wandering weeks in the north of France , and next crossing Belgium on foot, the first group of French refugees arrived at the Dutch border October 20, completely exhausted.

At the gate in the electric wire fence at the border to the Netherlands – the so-called ‘Death Wire’ (dutch : Dodendraad ) Dutch soldiers took them over from German escorts.

Some refugees had travelled by tram part of the route crossing Belgium to the belgian border town Molenbeersel.

At the dutch border the refugees were welcomed and ladies from relief committees provide the refugees with food and drinks on the road to Stramproy in the Netherlands.

Within days , thousands of French refugees arrive in the village of Stramproy and are transferred to the city of Weert .

On arrival in the city center of Weert the dutch army registered people and handed out soup and bread.

The weak, the sick, and maternity women were cared for by the Red Cross and taken to an aid post for further care.

The refugees were sheltered the night in buildings like convents and schools in Weert, before being housed elsewhere in the country the following days.

Farmers Flag Protest Holland | 20230108

The Dutch flag, red-white-blue, hanging upside down in the Green Heart (Groene Hart) of Holland.
Protest against either province plans for a new highway crossing the Green Heart here through the small villages like Boskoop, the farmland and the new ‘nature’ zone ‘Bentwoud’ started here just a few years ago ….. and/ or protest against the government’s radical plans to cut nitrogen compound emissions by requiring farmers to reduce livestock numbers, reduce the use of fertilizer, and consequently obliterate the farmers livelyhoods in Holland.
