NL – De Gouwe rivier stroomt hier vlakbij, aan het einde van deze straat, genaamd Hoge Gouwe, de stad Gouda binnen. Aan de overkant van de Gouwe – niet zichtbaar in deze scene – is de lager gelegen straat Lage Gouwe. Sinds de 15e eeuw is hier de Vismarkt in de overdekte gallerijen , de Visbanken. Een Visbank aan de overkant (niet zichtbaar in deze scene) voor de Goudse vishandelaren, en aan deze zijde voor de vishandelaren van elders (de Vreemden Vismarkt). Tot ca 1904 was hier nog visafslag. In deze filmopnames van rond 1920 lijkt er handel in planten in de Visbank.

EN – The Gouwe river flows nearby, at the end of this street, called Hoge Gouwe, into the city of Gouda. On the other side of the Gouwe – not visible in this scene – is the lower street Lage Gouwe. The Fish Market has been here in the covered galleries, the Visbanken, since the 15th century. One fish bank on the other side (not visible in this scene) for the Gouda fishmongers, and on this side another one for the fishmongers from elsewhere (the Strange Fish Market). There was still a fish auction here until about 1904. In these film recordings from around 1920, there appears to be a trade in plants in the Visbank. The Sint-Janskerk (St. John’s Church) can be seen in the background.

NL – ‘Boskoops koornmoolen’ in Boskoop (De Ham), dorp aan de Gouwe rivier in Holland, ca 1920. Bouwjaar 1786, gesloopt in 1934 voor aanleg van de weg Alphen-Gouda – over het jaagpad langs de Gouwe. EN – Boskoop’s grist mill with name ‘Boskoops koornmoolen’ in Boskoop (De Ham) village on the Gouwe river in Holland, around 1920. Built in 1786, demolished in 1934 for the construction of the Alphen-Gouda road – over the towpath along the Gouwe. A predecessor grist mill was already there around 1600. ‘Entartete Art’ 1935 – Coleman Hawkins & Leo de la Fuente in Holland

American saxophonist Coleman Hawkins announces and plays – accompanied by Leo de la Fuente on piano – on his tenor saxophone ‘I wished that I were twins’.

In 1934, Coleman Hawkins left the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra and Amerika, moved to Europe, and joined the Jack Hylton Orchestra in England. Hylton and his band made regular ‘continental’ tours, and started another European tour January 1935 accompanied by Coleman Hawkins in Holland. At the end of January 1935 Hawkins joins the dutch band The Rambers … for 8 days … because Hawkins was denied entry to Germany because of his race, while Hylton and his band continued their tour without him and play for eight days at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall.

To end this special week with Hawkins well, the bandleader of The Ramblers – Theo Uden Masman – arranged with Decca for recordings 4 february 1935 in Pulchri Studio in The Hague, Holland, including this : I wish I were twins…that was also recorded on film by Polygoon (Polygoontoon) for the dutch cinema news for next week .

Coleman Hawkins is accomponied here on film by the dutch jazz pioneer Leo de la Fuente on piano , playing ‘I wished that I were twins’ . After the recordings, Hawkins moves further into Europe.

Leo – Leonard Henriques – de la Fuente, who was born Jewish in Amsterdam 28 March 1902, was deported by the nazi’s to Auschwitz on 2 November 1942, and died 30 April 1944 ‘somewhere in Mid Europe’.

Wood Works ‘Matse’ – 1920s Waddinxveen Works – Gouwe River | 20231121

NL – Meubelfabriek Matse zou in 1926 zijn verhuisd van de werkplaats aan de zuidkant van Waddinxveen naar de leegstaande panden aan de noordkant van Waddinxveen van een voormalige kurkwarenfabriek (Vermeulen & Co Kurkwarenfabriek, die stopte, failliet in 1922), met een apart Expeditiegebouw direct aan de rivier de Gouwe, en daarachter aan de overkant van de Noordkade de hoofdfabriek.

Het hier gepresenteerde beeldmateriaal is gebaseerd op de film Waddinxveen (acte 1) van Willy Mullens (Haghe Film), gearchiveerd door Beeld & Geluid (Open Beelden) met metadata: gepubliceerd op 1 januari 1925.
De eerste beelden hier gefilmd vanaf een stoomboot op de Gouwe, tonen het Expeditie-gebouw van Meubelfabriek Matse, en ernaast (rechterzijde in het frame) het gebouwtje van de machinekamer, met een zuiginstallatie voor het voeren van al het houtafval naar de brander van de stoommachine voor de productie in de fabriek. De volgende beelden tonen productie werk – nog niet op grote schaal – en ook de genoemde machinekamer.

Het laatste beeld buiten – de gevel – en de binnenopnamen met vorm van de ramen , en de kleinschalige meer handmatige productie , geven aan dat de houtbewerking gefilmd is op het oude adres van Matse op de Wilhelmina kade langs de Gouwe in Zuid Waddinxveen.

EN – Furniture factory ‘Matse’ (Meubelfabriek Matse) is said to have moved in 1926 from their workshop on the south side of Waddinxveen to the empty factory buildings on the north side of Waddinxveen of a former cork products factory (Vermeulen & Co Kurkwarenfabriek, that stopped , bankrupt in 1922), with a seperate shipping building (Expeditie) right on the Gouwe river , and behind it across the Noordkade (North quay) road the main factory.
The footage presented here is based on film Waddinxveen (acte 1) by Willy Mullens (Haghe Film) , archived by Sound & Vision (Open Images) with metadata : published Jan 1, 1925.
First images here filmed from a steamboat on the Gouwe, show the shipping building (Expeditie) of the furniture factory Meubelfabriek Matse, and next to it (right side in the frame) the small building of the machine room, with a suction installation feeding all the wood waste to the burner of the steam machine for the production in the factory. The next images show wood work – though not yet on a large scale – and also the machine room .
