Filmmaker Rudolf Breslauer also filmed two of his children in the Westerborkfilm…

Stefan (left) & Ursula Breslauer, children of Rudolf Breslauer, the filmmaker of the Westerbork film at the farm of Camp Westerbork in 1944 – identified by the dutch photographer Sake Elzinga, who received Breslauer’s family photo albums last year when the family of Ursula – the only survivor – visited an expo on Breslauer in the Westerbork museum in the Netherlands.

Camp commander (SS-Obersturmführer) Albert Gemmeker ordered the Westerbork film , made by the German Jewish prisoner, photographer, Rudolf Breslauer in the spring of 1944.

Today 80 years ago – March 5, 1944 – the camp is an ‘Arbeitslager’ – a work camp – when Rudolf Breslauer starts filming the daily life of the Westerbork prisoners — inside : in the barracks, for example a religious service, cabaret, workshops, factories, aircraft and battery recycling, medical care, and outside the barracks : construction of a greenhouse, a football match, women working out, chopping wood, incoming transports, and eventually also the departure of a deportation train. After Breslauer films the deportation of Jews, Roma and Sinti to Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz on May 19, 1944 the filming stops.
The haunting image of the 9-year-old dutch Sinti-girl Settela, standing in the closing doors of the goods train, and the unique footage of that deportation train that leaves the Westerbork camp, became iconic after the war.

Deportation Breslauer family

Werner Rudolf Breslauer , his wife Bella Weihsmann, sons Stefan and Max Michael (Mischa), and daughter Ursula were deported autumn 1944 from Westerbork to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz. Only Ursula survived.

Trade & Industry Expansion – 1920s Gouda Works – Gouwe River
NL – Naast transport vindt uitbreiding van handel en industrie plaats aan de rand van de stad, hier langs de Turfsingel, een van de vier stadsgrachten rond de binnenstad van Gouda – grachten historisch ter verdediging, langs een stadsmuur.
De Turfsingel verbindt de Hollandsche IJssel en de Gouwe als schakel in de Nederlandse binnenvaart waterwegen.
De panoramische zwaai in deze korte film toont eerst de Gouwekerk aan de overkant van het kanaal, en vervolgens naar links, de twee identieke gebouwen van kaashandelaar Van Zwet, en daarnaast een grote draaiende korenmolen ‘Molen de Roode Leeuw’.
Achter die windmolen – hier niet zichtbaar – bevindt zich de aardewerkfabriek ‘Plazuid’ (Plateelfabriek Zuid-Holland).
De laatste beelden tonen – aan deze kant van het water – Viruly’s Zeepfabriek als onderdeel van de Stearine Kaarsenfabriek, en in het water ervoor een schuit met vaten gevuld waarschijnlijk met olie/vet gebruikt voor zowel de zeep als de kaars productie.
Achterin zijn een schoorsteen en de watertoren van de Machinale Garenspinnerij te zien.

EN – Apart from transport , expansion of trade and industry takes place on the outskirts of the city here, along the ‘Turfsingel’ canal, one of the four city canals around the inner city of Gouda – canals, historically for defence, along a city wall.
The Turfsingel canal connects the Hollandsche IJssel and Gouwe rivers as a link in the dutch inland waterway.
The panoramic sweep in this short film starts with a shot showing across the canal the Gouwekerk (Gouwe church), and next sweeping to the left, showing two identical buildings of cheese trader Van Zwet, and a big turning grist windmill ‘Molen de Roode Leeuw’ (the ‘Red Lion’).
Behind that windmill – not showing here – is the pottery factory ‘Plazuid’ (Plateelfabriek Zuid Holland).
The final images show – at this side of the canal – Viruly’s Soap factory as part of the Candle factory (Stearine Kaarsenfabriek), and in front a barge with barrels filled probably with oil/fat used for both the soap and candle production.

Wood Works ‘Matse’ – 1920s Waddinxveen Works – Gouwe River | 20231121

NL – Meubelfabriek Matse zou in 1926 zijn verhuisd van de werkplaats aan de zuidkant van Waddinxveen naar de leegstaande panden aan de noordkant van Waddinxveen van een voormalige kurkwarenfabriek (Vermeulen & Co Kurkwarenfabriek, die stopte, failliet in 1922), met een apart Expeditiegebouw direct aan de rivier de Gouwe, en daarachter aan de overkant van de Noordkade de hoofdfabriek.

Het hier gepresenteerde beeldmateriaal is gebaseerd op de film Waddinxveen (acte 1) van Willy Mullens (Haghe Film), gearchiveerd door Beeld & Geluid (Open Beelden) met metadata: gepubliceerd op 1 januari 1925.
De eerste beelden hier gefilmd vanaf een stoomboot op de Gouwe, tonen het Expeditie-gebouw van Meubelfabriek Matse, en ernaast (rechterzijde in het frame) het gebouwtje van de machinekamer, met een zuiginstallatie voor het voeren van al het houtafval naar de brander van de stoommachine voor de productie in de fabriek. De volgende beelden tonen productie werk – nog niet op grote schaal – en ook de genoemde machinekamer.

Het laatste beeld buiten – de gevel – en de binnenopnamen met vorm van de ramen , en de kleinschalige meer handmatige productie , geven aan dat de houtbewerking gefilmd is op het oude adres van Matse op de Wilhelmina kade langs de Gouwe in Zuid Waddinxveen.

EN – Furniture factory ‘Matse’ (Meubelfabriek Matse) is said to have moved in 1926 from their workshop on the south side of Waddinxveen to the empty factory buildings on the north side of Waddinxveen of a former cork products factory (Vermeulen & Co Kurkwarenfabriek, that stopped , bankrupt in 1922), with a seperate shipping building (Expeditie) right on the Gouwe river , and behind it across the Noordkade (North quay) road the main factory.
The footage presented here is based on film Waddinxveen (acte 1) by Willy Mullens (Haghe Film) , archived by Sound & Vision (Open Images) with metadata : published Jan 1, 1925.
First images here filmed from a steamboat on the Gouwe, show the shipping building (Expeditie) of the furniture factory Meubelfabriek Matse, and next to it (right side in the frame) the small building of the machine room, with a suction installation feeding all the wood waste to the burner of the steam machine for the production in the factory. The next images show wood work – though not yet on a large scale – and also the machine room .
