The proceedings paper delivered at the 4th IPITA is included below in the Notes , as well as references of the related full papers and related chapters of PhD thesis.

This IPITA meeting in Amsterdam was also a good opportunity to catch up with colleague Nick London (see photo) from the Leicester (UK) group discussing our Leiden and Leicester islet isolation work using the University of Wisconsin organ preservation solution (UWS). The Leicester group were one of the first groups to examine and adopt our novel method of islet isolation in UWS.
Several groups reported at this 4th IPITA symposium on the effects of using (modified) UW solution (UWS) during islet isolation : Leicester (pig, human islets), Oxford (rat, rabbit islets), Minneapolis (human islets), Paris, and Giessen (clinical human allo islet transplantation).

During the 4th IPITA I discussed in detail the rationale of our UWS work, the important components of UWS, and basal solution for islet purification (Percoll-UWS) with Yoko Mullen (in particular) and her co-worker Charles Brunicardi (see photo) of the UCLA Islet Transplant Team (LA, USA)…contributing to the development of Yoko’s Los Angeles preservation solution #1 (LAP-1) patented in 1997 (see Notes, US5679565A).

Notes

AIDPIT was known first as AIDSPIT, short for : Artificial Insulin Delivery Systems, Pancreas and Islet Transplantation.
The AIDSPIT study group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) was established in the early 1980s.
In 2000 the acronym AIDSPIT was replaced by ‘AIDPIT’, in order to avoid confusion with the AIDS disease.

The annual meetings are generally held in the little town of Igls, close to Innsbruck in Austria — the first years, early in February, and next, late in January. Once, in the 1990s (following a discussion ‘…why always in Igls?’, the meeting was held in Amsterdam.
From 2011, the annual workshops of AIDPIT continued as a joined meeting with the EPITA — the European Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association — part of the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT).
From 2024 — following the 12th EPITA Symposium & 41st AIDPIT Workshop in 2023 — this symposium is referred to as the EPITA Symposium.

The original film (2016) was uploaded to Vimeo (size 640×480), and posted Jan 25, 2016 (20160125) at blogging site 1-memo.com , URL https://1-memo.com/2016/01/25/24th-aidpit-workshop-igls/

A second, remastered, video edition (2022) was produced by upscaling the original video file (converted to size 1920 × 1440) and adding a caption, and uploaded to YouTube Jan 25, 2022.

This second edition is published now – Jan 25th 2026 – as part of the Science series of posts at my site michelvanderburg.com, started in 2022 to make available online a portfolio of the science section of my CV, a project I hope to finish soon… in a few months.

Note : The Dutch dissertation system has a tradition of accompanying the generally very specialised PhD thesis with ten or more propositions (other ‘theses’), that should be ‘defensible’, and while at least some should be related to the dissertation, others generally reflect the PhD candidate’s broader interests, and the last one is often playful.

Publisher’s description

Pancreatic islet transplantation by a new method is introduced here : the isolation of islets in an organ preservation solution, the University of Wisconsin solution. A new concept allowing for the first time large-scale isolation and transplantation of consistently near 100% pure islets of Langerhans in a preclinical dog model with fasting normoglycemia up to 3 years posttransplant. Detailed metabolic studies demonstrated normal insulin levels after meals with preservation of gut hormone action stimulating insulin secretion at the mild hyperglycemia after meals. The introduction of the University of Wisconsin solution organ preservation solution for islet isolation at the start of these studies in 1989 is a new concept … and has been shown by now in 2022 , world-wide , to make the future of islet isolation and transplantation methods for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Illustration of Islet Isolation and Transplantation
(Captions at last page of the dissertation)

1. Paul Langerhans
2. Section of the normal dog pancreas showing islets stained reddish-brown (immunostained for insulin)
3. The author, watching the dog islet isolation procedure in the Minneapolis surgical research laboratory
4. Start of the operation in the dog (From left to right: Professor Hein G. Gooszen, Ms. M. Jane Field (Minneapolis), and Dr. Onno R. Guicherit, at our surgical laboratory)
5. The pancreas is removed
6. Infusion of the collagenase solution via the ducts in the dog pancreas – collagenase leaking from the pancreas is recirculated using a pump (Islet laboratory, at the Department of Cell Biology and Histology, Leiden)
7. During collagenase digestion at 37-39°C the pancreas falls apart (non-stained pancreatic exocrine tissue and free-ed small blood vessel, at low magnification)
8. Dissociated pancreatic tissue
9. Tissue is further dispersed by aspiration in a syringe, and sieved to remove undigested fragments, ducts and vessels ~ demonstrated by Ms. Jane Field at our islet laboratory.
10. Tissue suspension demonstrating low purity of the islets (stained red by dithizone) obtained by dextran gradient separation after isolation in the RPMI tissue culture solution (dark-brown exocrine fragments remain unstained)
11. Pure islet suspension (after dithizone staining) obtained by density separation in Percoll gradients (in University of Wisconsin solution) after islet isolation in the University of Wisconsin solution (islets are only slightly stained due to poor diffusion over the cell membrane in the preservation solution)
12. Section of highly purified islets obtained by dextran density separation after isolation in the University of Wisconsin solution
13. Islets are autotransplanted by infusion in the spleen of the dog
14. Transplanted islet in section of the spleen of one of the dogs shortly after the onset of fasting hyperglycemia at three months posttransplant (immunostained for insulin)
15. Highly purified human islets obtained by Percoll density separation after isolation in the University of Wisconsin solution (immunostained with gold for insulin; not counterstained)
