Putmolen ~ Episode 1 “Crystal Ball”

In the Aarlanderveen polders around Alphen in Holland, here Mill #4 of the Gang of Four Mills – also known as the Putmolen (Pit mill).
This Gang of four mills (dutch : Molenviergang) is working together to upload the polder water around the Aarlanderveen village in 4 steps – by stepped drainage via basins – all together almost 5 meters , 16 feet, higher into the Old Rhine river.
This Putmolen mill (with millers Rita and Johan Slingerland) drains the lowest part of the polder, the so-called Put (pit), where peat was still extracted when this mill was build in 1801 , after the higher part of the polder had already been milled dry. Quay between Mills #2 and #3

① memo 20180921 ~ Quay between Mills #2 and #3 ~ Walking the quay (dutch ‘kade’) along the waterway – close to the ‘siphon’ – between Mills #2 and #3 of the quartet of windmills together dewatering (regulate the water level of) the polder west of the village Aarlanderveen (Alphen) – draining the surplus of water into the Old Rhine – last sunday in the Green Heart of Holland .

① memo 20180916 ~ Mill #2 ~ The second mill of the quartet of windmills working together to keep the polder dry west of the village Aarlanderveen (Alphen) in the Green Heart of Holland . The waterway drains into the Old Rhine nearby.
Mill #2 (dutch ‘Molen 2’ or ‘middenmolen’) is not turning in this video .. it’s the nearby model mill that is turning.
These are the only mills in the world that are still being used as main dewatering for a polder.
Recently the dutch decided to start using again such historic polder water windmills everywhere in the Netherlands to assist the modern electric dewatering pumps if needed .
