Gouwe River Boat Trip 1919 | 20231107

News : Ship rams bridge on the river Gouwe.
Once more a ship has rammed one of the three lifting bridges over the Gouwe canal (in the towns : Waddinxveen, Boskoop, and Alphen) — today in Waddinxveen … blocking road traffic … probably for months. This happens every few years escpecially after the opening of one of the largest inland shipping terminals on the Gouwe in Alphen aan den Rijn in the Netherlands. These bridges were built in the 1930s.

Boat Trip 1919
Here a 1919 silent documentary about the Gouwe river – before the bridges were build. Filmed from a boat moving along the Gouwe from Waddinxveen to Boskoop. A cameraman films life, on and alongside the river, with scenes of ships, houses, mills, gardens, and water. Occasionally the boat will pass by a woman doing the wash, or a man working on his boat. The trip leads to Boskoop, a village criss-crossed by ditches, streams, and countless small bridges.

Putmolen ~ Episode 6 “Hit by the Mill”

‘Klap Van De Molen’ (Hit by the Mill) is a dutch saying like ‘have a screw loose’.
Actually, no kidding, such accidents happen easily – it happened once in my ancestor’s family on a mill near The Hague : the miller’s wife was lifted in the air by one of the sails…while hanging the laundry to dry – I was told years ago by my father.
Take the right door , Rita – the assistant miller and wife of miller Johan Slingerland – is explaining to the visiting children – the entrance on the opposite side of the rotating sails. The miller’s family is living here in the Putmolen water mill in the Aarlanderveen polder around Alphen in Holland.
Filmed using an Ambeo (Sennheiser – Apogee) headset for binaural sound and the iPhone X on the dutch national mill day 2018.

Putmolen ~ Episode 5 “Hill Mill”

The octagonal smock polder mill Putmolen is towering above the polder land on a kind of artificial hill in the Aarlanderveen polder around Alphen in Holland. Some therefore speak of a ‘hill mill’, in dutch : ‘beltmolen’ – with the old dutch word ‘belt’ for ‘berg’ (mountain).

This smock type windmill has a sloping tower with eight sides, topped with a cap that rotates to bring the sails into the wind. This type of windmill got its name from its resemblance to smocks worn by farmers in an earlier period.
Filmed using an Ambeo (Sennheiser – Apogee) headset for binaural sound and the iPhone X on the dutch national mill day 2018.
