Color Grading Dolby Sony ZV-1 | 20210222

Color Grading Dolby Sony ZV-1 | 20210222 | 1-memo•com
New edition of footage used previously for a Sennheiser MKE200 Microphone Review , first published September 20th 2020 (20200920) and filmed that day with the Sony ZV-1 camera at sunset in the Green Heart of Holland. No fur windscreen on top of the Sennheiser MKE200 Microphone (which has some built in sheet protection), using footage shot before the actual review discussion ;)

Follow up on experiments with including now Dolby Vision metadata with HDR export after some colorgrading on footage shown before as : 1) Sennheiser MKE200 & Sony ZV-1 HLG | 20210212
and
2) Final Color Grading HLG Sony ZV-1 | 20200925~20200929

Macbook Air M1 is much slower than expected and/or first experienced. After showing a 2-3 times faster export from FCP the first 1-2 days , now export times are probably similar compared to my maxed-out late 2015 iMac.
Note also that I did start all software on the M1 Mac fresh – no copying of system or applications from the older Mac.
I left out titles/logos here , trying to improve export time – with no success it seems.
Exporting time of these 4K HDR files is roughly 10 times the length of the video.

NO Neat Video noise reduction available it seems for this M1 chip mac. I applied both FCP native noise reduction effect , and some color grading (exposure mostly, and some saturation and color temp changes) using the FCP color wheels on a custom Motion made 4K-wide gamut adjustment layer. The important adjustmenst are a major increase in midtones exposure , and slight exposure decrease in highlights and shadows

Now a FCP wide gamut library was used, with a Rec 2020 HLG project setting for this raw HDR footage filmed with the Sony ZV-1 camera set on the PP10 picture profile with Hybrid Log-Gamma HLG2. Now noise reduction now either.
Though the original footage is 8-bit, correct export from this FCPX project requires 10-bit.

New edition of the Sennheiser MKE200 Microphone Review , first published September 20th 2020 (20200920) and filmed that day with the Sony ZV-1 camera at sunset in the Green Heart of Holland.
Sound is the same, however, in this edition no manual colorgrading was done, in contrast to several colorgrading attempts done both 20200920, and later that month : 20200925, 20200927, 20200928, and ‘finally’ 20200929.

Magic Woods • @1MEMO 20201016

Magic Woods ~ Fallen tree trunk on the forest floor with magic mushrooms (Clustered woodlover, Hypholoma fasciculare, Psilocybe fascicularis, Sulphur tuft, dutch : Gewone zwavelkop) – and a harvestman (daddylonglegs) last week in the woods around Alphen in Holland. Filmed with Sony ZV-1 camera and Sennheiser MKE 200 microphone.

Shroom Stems • @1MEMO 20201009

Stems of cluster magic mushrooms – a slugs after dinner. Clustered woodlover (Hypholoma fasciculare, Psilocybe fascicularis, Sulphur tuft, dutch : Gewone zwavelkop) in Alphen, Holland.
Filmed with Sony ZV-1 camera (PP10: rec.2020/HLG) and Sennheiser MKE 200 microphone.
(Note : I did some comparisons today of Sony’s default ‘no picture profile’ and PP10 with rec.2020/HLG in the ZV-1 camera. I preferred the PP10 outcome , after color grading in FCPX with saturation decrease and exposure changes. That comparison is not shown here.)

Magic Mushrooms Leftovers • @1MEMO 20201007

What’s left after dinner of the cluster magic mushrooms – eaten by land slugs (see yesterdays clip).
Filmed with Sony ZV-1 using Picture Profile 10 (PP10) with the Hybrid Log-Gamma HLG2.
Edited – no color grading – in standard Final Cut Pro X library (Rec. 709) changing the clips setting in the inspector for ‘Color Space Override’ from ‘Off’ to ‘Rec.2020’ (corresponding to the BT.2020 setting in my Sony ZV-1 camera’s PP10 profile). Sound Sennheiser MKE 200 microphone level 20, with the furry windshield.
Clustered woodlover (Hypholoma fasciculare, Psilocybe fascicularis, Sulphur tuft, dutch : Gewone zwavelkop) in Alphen, Holland.

Final Color Grading HLG Sony ZV-1

Final choice for color grading HDR footage from the Sony ZV-1 filmed using the Picture Profile 10 (PP10) with the Hybrid Log-Gamma HLG2.
My final choice is that version uploaded Sep. 25th (20200925) prepared in a standard library (Rec. 709) of Final Cut Pro X (FCPX). Here I added Neat Video noise reduction, for this 20200929 final version !

Over the past two days I tried to improve on this video by editing in a in a Wide Gamut-HDR FCPX library, producing several versions : 20200928, and 20200927. However , I am using the Late 2015 Retina 5K iMac with a P3 color gamut – not matching the wider Rec.2020 gamut of the footage. Strange things – big difference in colors/luma – happen working with that Wide Gamut library , when exporting the edited work in either h264 (or h265) versus Apple ProRes 422.

I believe I obtain superior and more consistent results when grading in the standard FCPX library (Rec. 709), after changing the clips setting in this library for ‘Color Space Override’ in the FCPX clip inspector : from ‘Off’ to ‘Rec.2020’ (corresponding to the BT.2020 setting in my Sony ZV-1 camera’s PP10 profile).

Next for color grading only the color wheels in FCPX were used for a slight overall (master) increase of saturation , a slight reduction of the brightness of highlights and shadows, plus a larger increase in brightness of the midtones.

Sound from the Sennheiser MKE 200 microphone without the furry windshield.

HLG Sony ZV-1 HDR ProRes Film

Apple ProRes 422 file upload of HDR (Rec. 2020 HLG2) footage shot a week ago at sunset in Holland with the Sony ZV-1 camera , with brightness edited using the color wheels in Final Cut Pro X (slight reduction in the highlights and shadows , and a substantial increase in midtones) in a Wide Gamut-HDR library, plus Neat Video noise reduction and exported in Compressor.
