He still has all his fingers : wood carver Norbert Danler (from Ellbögen) showing his masks (tyrolean ‘larven’) – resp. spring , summer , autumn , winter, in his little shop in Igls , Tyrol , Austria, Jan 6, 2013. Different summer masks for different towns.
Masks used in Krampus runs (Krampuslaufen) and the village carnivals (Fasching , Fasnacht) around Innsbruck.
His workshop in Ellbögen and this little shop in Igls, are both along the Via Tirolensis, along the pilgrimage routes St James Way (Jakobsweg , Camino de Santiago) and the Via Romea Germanica running between Innsbruck and Brenner on the Italian border. On our return in Igls by the end of the day, Tirolean carnival (“Fasnacht”) started following a drink in Ägidihof with the Muller parade with characteristic masks at the village square of Igls.

Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Skating Tour) Thursday 22 januari 1942 with extremely low temperatures, ranging from -33 Celcius at sunrise to -15 later that the day. Despite the German occupation, a record number of participants showed up at the start, 95% of whom managed to reach the finish. After the race, the Leeuwarden Diaconessen Hospital saw an influx of cold-related injuries. Many skaters suffered frostbite, including frostbitten eyes, ears, toes, hands, and even genitals. Some had to undergo amputations of their toes. Three tour riders later died in the hospital as a result of their frostbite injuries. (1). Nazi-approved dutch cinema news ‘Tobis Nieuws’.
